Mission Statement
The Ohio Council for the
Social Studies serves as the premier voice for social studies professionals in
Ohio. We advocate for the vital role of social studies and assist educators
through professional development for the delivery of effective and innovative
instruction. Our conferences and publications provide a network of services to
members throughout the state.
OCSS Members enhance
their careers through…
Professional Development
The Newsletter
The OCSS Newsletter is published four times a year. The newsletter
provides information regarding teaching materials and methods, programs and
projects for teachers and students, legislative trends, opportunities for
professional development and more.
The Review
Published in the summer, members receive a copy of Ohio’s own scholarly
social studies journal which offers in-depth articles and a potential
opportunity to have your research and articles published.
The Annual Conference
The annual spring gathering of professionals offers prominent speakers in
the field, job-alike networking groups, numerous break-out sessions and contacts
with large and small vendors. Regional, one-day opportunities are also offered.
Web Site
Members can stay in touch with OCSS leaders and get the latest info on
conferences and professional development opportunities. Archived information is
also available.

Our Opinions
Teachers of all types are represented on the OCSS Executive Board.
Elementary, middle, senior high, vocational and collegiate level teachers all
have reps on the board as well as curriculum supervisors. These are in addition
to regional reps from around the state. Conveying your special interests is
easily done.
Staying Current
with Curriculum
OCSS takes an active role in reporting actions by the Ohio General Assembly,
the Ohio Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education that will have
an impact on the way you conduct your classes.
Being Part of the Process
OCSS members have served on the Ohio Model Curriculum Committee, the Ohio
Licensure Committee, and test writing committees. We have testified in favor of
increased social studies graduation requirements and sought equal treatment of
educators’ views at public hearings on educational issues.
Honoring Excellence in
the Field
Individual Honors
OCSS annually recognizes members with Teacher-of-the-Year awards in
elementary, middle and high school categories. There is also an award for
Educator-of-the-Year recognizing a contributor from outside the classroom.
Recognizing Student Achievement
OCSS participates in the awards for Ohio History Day and gives the
President’s Scholarship annually to an exemplary college student member who is
planning a career in the field.
